5 Tips to Crush your Revision

Hi there, learners! Whether you’re preparing for your final exams, studying for a big test, or just hoping to master your subject material, revision is a crucial part of the learning process. But, let’s face it, staring at a mountain of notes and textbooks can be daunting, to say the least. What if there was a way to make revision less terrifying and even – dare I say it – fun? Well, hold on tight, because today we’re going to reveal five terrific techniques to help you crush your revision!

1. Set Small, Manageable Deadlines: Bite-Sized Brilliance

You wouldn’t eat an entire pizza in one bite, would you? Sure, it’s tempting, but we all know it’s not practical – or even possible. Treat your revision the same way. Break up your work into digestible chunks, setting small, manageable deadlines for each topic or chapter. You’re not just devouring information but savouring each bite, letting the knowledge marinate.

Creating a study schedule can be a great way to implement this technique. Allocate specific time slots to different topics, ensuring that you cover all the material needed without overwhelming yourself. This method not only makes your study more organised but also reduces the pressure, keeping that stress monster at bay.

2. Make It Fun: Level Up with Revision Games

Yes, you read it right! Turning your revision into a game can make the process more enjoyable.

Reading notes for hours and hours is boring! There are plenty of revision games already out there to help make your revision fun. If in doubt: you could even invent your own game!

Consider making flashcards, using websites like Quizlet, Kahoot or Jeopardy Labs, or even crafting your own trivia game based on your study material. Engage your friends and classmates to make it a social activity. Who said revision had to be a lonely endeavour?

3. Celebrate the Small Wins: Unleash the Power of Positive Reinforcement

Every victory, no matter how small, is a step closer to your goal. Finished a chapter? Solved a complex equation? Memorised a tricky definition? Celebrate it! Treat yourself to a break, a snack, a quick dance around your room – whatever floats your victory boat.

Positive reinforcement not only uplifts your mood but also motivates you to keep going. It builds a bridge between hard work and reward, making the revision process something you look forward to, rather than dread.

4. Ask For Help: You’re Not Alone on this Journey

Stuck on a challenging concept? Can’t figure out an answer? Don’t struggle in silence. Reach out to tutors, teachers, classmates, or friends who can help. There’s no shame in needing help – after all, we were all students once.

Besides, teaching and discussing topics with others is a proven way to solidify your understanding. It encourages active engagement with the material and can often provide new perspectives that you hadn’t considered.

5. Repetition, Repetition, Repetition

Repetition is a powerful tool in the revision process. Repetition is a powerful tool in the revision process. (See what I did there…)

It may seem tedious, but it reinforces the neural pathways in your brain, helping the information stick. And we’re not just talking about reading the same notes over and over again.

Mix it up – rewrite your notes, explain the concept to someone else, use flashcards, or create a mind map. Find what works best for you and incorporate repetition into your study schedule.

Try putting flashcards in places that you see everyday so you are exposed to the content as much as possible. When I was at school – there was one topic of GCSE Physics that wouldn’t stick in my head. My solution? To photocopy the page of the textbooks and stick it up on the outside of my shower. That way I saw it every single morning – Every. Single. Morning. – and my brain couldn’t help but process it.

In summary, remember that revision doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By setting small deadlines, making it fun, celebrating small wins, seeking help when needed, and using repetition, you’ll be well on your way to acing your exams. Happy studying, everyone!
